If you’ve built your website on React, Vue, Angular, or any other JavaScript framework, you’ve probably wondered at some point whether Google can actually read the thing. JavaScript SEO is the practice of ensuring search engines can properly crawl, render, and index websites that rely heavily on JavaScript to deliver content. It’s a real discipline, and after two decades of doing SEO in Central Florida and beyond, I can tell you it’s also one of the most misunderstood corners of technical SEO.

Google has technically been able to render JavaScript since 2015. But “technically able” and “reliably doing it for your site” are two very different things. I’ve audited sites that looked gorgeous in a browser and were essentially invisible to Googlebot. Let me walk you through what’s actually happening under the hood — and what you need to do about it.

Why JavaScript Creates Crawling Problems in the First Place

Traditional HTML websites are simple for Google. Googlebot shows up, downloads the HTML file, reads the text, follows the links, done. JavaScript-heavy sites work differently. The browser (or Googlebot) downloads a mostly empty HTML shell, then executes JavaScript to build the actual content you see on screen.

That second step — executing JavaScript — costs time and resources. Google doesn’t have unlimited rendering capacity. They operate what’s called a render budget, separate from your crawl budget. If your JavaScript takes too long to execute, Googlebot may crawl your page but defer rendering it, sometimes for days or weeks. During that window, your content isn’t indexed.

This is especially problematic for Single Page Applications (SPAs), which are web apps that load a single HTML document and dynamically swap content using JavaScript as users navigate. React apps, Vue apps, Angular apps — these are all typically SPAs by default unless you configure them otherwise.

How Google Actually Crawls JavaScript Sites

Here’s the process Google uses, as documented in their own developer documentation. Googlebot first fetches the raw HTML. That goes into an indexing queue. Then, separately, a headless Chromium-based renderer processes the JavaScript and builds the full DOM. Only after that rendering step does Google see your actual content.

The problem is that rendering queue. It’s not instantaneous. Google has confirmed this two-step process publicly, and it means there’s always a delay between when your page is crawled and when your JavaScript-rendered content is actually indexed.

For a blog post or a product page on a small site, this might not matter much. For an e-commerce site with thousands of product pages, or a SaaS app where your pricing and feature pages are dynamically rendered, this delay can genuinely hurt your visibility.

The View Page Source Test: Your First Diagnostic

Before you do anything else, run this test right now. Open your website in Chrome, right-click anywhere, and select “View Page Source.” Not Inspect Element — View Page Source. That shows you the raw HTML Googlebot receives before any JavaScript runs.

If your main navigation, your body copy, your headings, and your internal links are all present in that source view, you’re in decent shape. If you see a nearly empty <div id="root"></div> or similar placeholder, your content is entirely JavaScript-rendered — and Google is dependent on that render queue to see anything meaningful on your pages.

I’ve done this test on client sites and found homepage body copy that was completely absent from the page source. The client had no idea. Their developer had built a beautiful React app, but from Googlebot’s initial perspective, the page was blank.

SPA SEO: The Specific Challenges React and Vue Sites Face

SPA SEO comes with a specific set of landmines. Here are the ones I see most often:

1. Navigation Links That Google Can’t Follow

SPAs often handle navigation through JavaScript event handlers rather than real <a href> tags. If your menu items are <div> elements with onClick handlers, Googlebot can’t follow them as links. You need real anchor tags with real URLs — not JavaScript-only navigation.

The History API (pushState) is fine for smooth client-side navigation, but the underlying links still need to be proper <a href> elements pointing to real URLs. This is non-negotiable for crawlability.

2. Meta Tags and Canonicals That Don’t Update on Route Changes

In a React SPA, when a user navigates from your homepage to your services page, the URL changes but the page doesn’t fully reload. If you’re not using a library like React Helmet (or the newer metadata APIs in Next.js) to dynamically update your title tags, meta descriptions, and canonical tags on each route change, Google may see the same meta data across all your pages. That’s a serious duplicate content signal.

3. Structured Data That’s Injected After Render

If your JSON-LD structured data is added to the DOM via JavaScript after the initial page load, Google may or may not pick it up reliably. Whenever possible, structured data should be in the server-rendered HTML, not injected client-side. This is especially important for product schema, FAQ schema, and review schema.

React SEO: The Right Architecture Decisions

React SEO specifically has gotten much more manageable since Next.js became the dominant framework for production React apps. If you’re building a new React site and SEO matters to you, Next.js with Server-Side Rendering (SSR) or Static Site Generation (SSG) should be your default choice — not Create React App or a plain Vite setup.

Here’s the practical breakdown of your rendering options:

  • Client-Side Rendering (CSR): JavaScript runs in the browser, builds the DOM. Worst for SEO unless you add prerendering.
  • Server-Side Rendering (SSR): The server generates full HTML on each request. Googlebot gets real content immediately. Best for dynamic, frequently-updated pages.
  • Static Site Generation (SSG): HTML is pre-built at deploy time. Extremely fast, excellent for SEO. Best for content that doesn’t change per-user.
  • Incremental Static Regeneration (ISR): Next.js-specific. Pre-builds pages but can regenerate them in the background. Good middle ground for content that updates periodically.

For most marketing sites and content-heavy pages, SSG or ISR is the right call. For user-specific dashboards or real-time data, SSR makes sense. Pure CSR should be reserved for authenticated app experiences where SEO doesn’t matter.

Performance Is Now an SEO Variable You Can’t Ignore

Core Web Vitals are Google’s performance metrics that directly influence rankings. For JavaScript-heavy sites, the one to watch right now is Interaction to Next Paint (INP), which replaced First Input Delay (FID) as an official Core Web Vital in March 2024. INP measures the responsiveness of your page to user interactions — clicks, taps, keyboard input.

JavaScript is the primary culprit for poor INP scores. Long tasks on the main thread, large JavaScript bundles, and unoptimized event handlers all contribute to sluggish interaction responses. The target is INP under 200ms. If you’re running a JavaScript-heavy site, check your INP score in Google Search Console under Core Web Vitals right now.

A few practical things you can do today to improve JavaScript performance for SEO:

  • Use async and defer attributes on non-critical scripts so they don’t block page rendering
  • Code split your JavaScript bundles using dynamic imports so users (and Googlebot) only load what’s needed for the current page
  • Tree-shake your dependencies — remove unused code from your bundles
  • Defer third-party scripts (chat widgets, analytics, ad pixels) until after the main content loads
  • Use Brotli compression on your server to reduce JavaScript file sizes in transit

Testing Tools You Should Actually Be Using

Don’t guess whether Google can read your site. Test it. Here are the tools I use regularly:

  • Google Search Console URL Inspection Tool: Shows you exactly how Googlebot rendered a specific page, including a screenshot. This is your ground truth.
  • Rich Results Test (search.google.com/test/rich-results): Tests whether your structured data is readable after JavaScript execution.
  • PageSpeed Insights: Shows Core Web Vitals data including INP, along with specific JavaScript optimization recommendations.
  • Screaming Frog SEO Spider: Can render JavaScript during crawls, giving you a closer approximation of how Googlebot sees your site at scale.

The URL Inspection Tool in Google Search Console is criminally underused. Pull up any important page on your site and look at the rendered HTML tab. Compare it to your View Page Source. The gap between those two views tells you exactly how much work your JavaScript is doing — and how dependent you are on Google’s render queue.

One Angle Most Posts Miss: Internal Linking in SPAs

Here’s something I almost never see covered adequately in JavaScript SEO guides: internal linking breaks silently in SPAs. When you use hash-based routing (/#/about instead of /about), Googlebot treats everything after the hash as a fragment identifier, not a real URL. Your internal link structure effectively collapses to a single page in Google’s eyes.

Always use the HTML5 History API with real path-based URLs (/about, /services/web-design). Pair that with a dynamically generated XML sitemap that lists all your SPA routes as real URLs. And make sure your server is configured to handle direct requests to those routes — not just return a 404 when someone (or Googlebot) navigates directly to /services/web-design.

Can Google index JavaScript content at all?

Yes. Google has been rendering JavaScript since 2015 using a headless Chromium-based renderer. The issue isn’t whether Google can render your JavaScript — it’s whether rendering happens quickly enough and reliably enough for your content to be indexed in a timely way. Critical content should always be in the initial HTML response when possible.

Is React bad for SEO?

React itself isn’t bad for SEO, but a pure client-side React app with no server rendering is a real SEO liability. React paired with Next.js and proper SSR or SSG is fully SEO-compatible. The framework is less important than the rendering architecture you choose.

What’s the difference between crawl budget and render budget?

Crawl budget refers to how many pages Googlebot will fetch from your site in a given period. Render budget is the separate allocation of resources Google uses to execute JavaScript on those fetched pages. Do I need to use Next.js for React SEO?
